Mario Ceroli was born in Castelfrentano, Chieti in 1938.
He was educated at the” Art Institute of Rome” and under Pecillo’s tuition he focused most of his work for pottery.
In 1958 won “YOUNG SCULPTURE” award at the National Gallery Modern Art of Rome.
During the 60s he gave a substantial contribution to refresh language patterns leading a path role towards new forms of poor art.
For more than 40 years his genius mind created new forms of art using natural material such as wood, soil, glass, ice and clothes.
He emphasize that simple material could make masterpieces who can harmonically placed among forms and spaces for the human race.
With his wooden shaped figures and his ironical mimicry, Ceroli had translated the abstract idea into concrete form of art.
Right after the first art works such as a nailed tree trunks, Ceroli took precious advices from real life and from advertisement: mid 70s are the right time for the “letters” and wooden giant objects.
It is almost typical of his style the wooden shaped figures lined up in an obsessive way as seen in “The China” in 1966 or placed in small spaces as seen in “Cassa Cristina” 1966.( space is the central theme of his work)
In 1967 Ceroli approached the “poor art”, whose aim is related to forms. During this time Ceroli reviewed big artist’s masterpieces , using the 3d such as :“ La battle of San Romano” by Paolo Uccello. Leonardo's Man , and The Riace's bronze statues.
In the mid 80s the glass layers replaced the wooden ones.
In the same time he realized “The Horse” for the RAI broadcast television main building.
Ceroli had collected his masterpieces in a space of 3000m2, a sort of house-museum, his sculptures seemed to respect the metaphysical universe.
He also approached theatre as the stage designer for the “Teatro stabile” of Turin (Richard III by W. Shakespeare, 1968) and for “La Scala” of Milan( Norma by Vincenzo Bellini)
